Tips at non sit down eateries and other places like starbucks

This article at digg about waiters and tip jars at other places got me thinking, and leads to a little rant. First of all I don;t mind tipping people and tipping well. I am one of the people that will choose not to go out and eat in a sit down restaurant if Ican’t afford to tip at least 20%. I have tipped less when service is really bad, but generally I overlook issues that are out of the waiter or waitresses control.

Secondly I used to tip a buck and change, or sometimes more at Starbucks. I order complicated drinks, not just what’s on the menu. Much like my orders at fast food places and other restaurants. Now-a-days I don;t tip often at Starbucks. Now that a majority of starbucks are using automatic machines, and most so called baristas there have as much knowledge about pulling a manual shot as the average McDonalds employees, I just don;t see the point. Starbucks should be paying well, and I bet they have better benefits than I do.

Secondly, if I’m in a sub shop and pay $18 for two sandwiches, this place better be paying their people well enough to want to work there a long time. I hate tip jars at the door of any club. I don’t mind tipping people who are really providing service. I think that the 2.13 an hour many waitresses are paid should be stopped completely. Most wait staffers have to do sidework for 2 bucks an hour when they are not earning tips, and that is bullshit.

More on this later.
